Talyen von Cravat

Talyen von Cravat was a decorated officer of the Grand Rislandian Army who rose from lowborn origins to become captain of the airship Liliana, Commodore of the Grand Rislandian Air Force, and one of Rislandia's most capable military commanders; she was also a close confidant of Baron Theodore von Monocle, whom she later married, and was regarded by Zaira von Monocle as one of the two people she trusted most in the world.

Talyen von Cravat

Talyen von Cravat

Talyen von Cravat was one of the most remarkable figures in Rislandian military history. Described by Matthias du Gearsmith as "one of the finest officers Rislandia's ever had," she rose through the ranks of the Grand Rislandian Army to become captain of the airship Liliana and, ultimately, Commodore of the Grand Rislandian Air Force. Her title of Commodore was granted as a commendation for her service rather than by lineage. She was also known to Zaira von Monocle as one of her closest friends and mentors, and was in a romantic relationship with Baron Theodore von Monocle, whom she called "Theo," and whom she later married. Despite her marriage, she continued to use her maiden name von Cravat in professional contexts. By the time of The Iron Wedding, she was listed among the best advisors in Rislandia, alongside Zaira von Monocle's father and Matthias du Gearsmith, and served as an advisor to Queen Reina I.

Talyen was lowborn and worked her way up to a noble name through military service, having been under Baron Theodore von Monocle's command before their romantic relationship began.

Appearance

In For Steam and Country, Talyen was described as having dark, tanned skin, pale blue eyes, and dark hair that fell just below her ears, sometimes tied back behind her head. She wore a black military uniform with purple stripes across the front, black pants, and laced boots reaching to her knees. A leather holster on each side carried a sword and a pistol respectively. On her right breast pocket she wore a metal pin bearing angel wings and the Crown of Malaky, and her military cap bore a gold pendant of the same design. She also wore goggles set above her head and, on field missions, a leather jacket.

In The Blood of Giants, Talyen was noted to carry matching sets of twin daggers and pistols on her belt. During this period she was visibly pregnant, her belly swollen and growing rounder, and she walked with a waddle.

In The Fight for Rislandia, Talyen was again heavily pregnant. When encountered in the war room, she appeared pale with dark circles around her eyes and frazzled hair. Following the birth of her daughter Lilly von Monocle, she was seen resting in a bed with fluffy pillows at Cliffside Castle, her hair tangled and messy, her gown wrinkled, and her face without makeup—a worn-down appearance that Zaira von Monocle noted she had never witnessed in her before.

In The Iron Wedding, Talyen had returned to fighting shape, her form well-defined in her Grand Rislandian Army grey uniform with cap. She bore a brass pendant of the Crest of Malaky on her right breast and the Rislandian Medal of Valor on her left breast. She was described as having long dark hair and a slightly more pointed face with higher cheekbones than Zaira von Monocle—a detail that became relevant when Zaira used a changeling net to take on Talyen's appearance.

Personality

Talyen was consistently described as stoic, disciplined, and calculating. King Malaky XVI noted she was not one for friendly conversation. She processed difficulty through action and duty, and maintained a composed bearing even under extreme stress. She was nonetheless capable of warmth toward those she considered family, hugging Zaira von Monocle and acknowledging she may have misjudged her. She was noted to have too much honor to take what was not hers, and was described as well attuned to more than just the airship. She was also known for advising those close to her to breathe in and out slowly in tense situations, counsel that Zaira von Monocle recalled and applied in the field on multiple occasions.

In The Fight for Rislandia, Talyen expressed a preference for direct action over waiting, stating, "I'd much rather be fighting. This is far more uncomfortable than having bullets shot in my direction." She also demonstrated characteristic practicality and care for those around her, warning Baron Theodore von Monocle against going to the front lines and reminding him that he had spent two years in a Wyranth prison the last time he acted rashly. She noted that stress could be bad for his health at his age, and suggested that if the worst came to pass, she could flee to Atrebla on one of the ships.

In The Iron Wedding, Talyen kept her composure stoically at the funeral procession and was observed to move through the palace with purpose, people naturally parting for her. She smiled at Baron Theodore von Monocle's comment about missions and sighed when Zaira von Monocle announced her decision, suggesting a characteristic restraint in expressing emotion even in personal moments.

Early Career

Talyen's early service in the Grand Rislandian Army predated her association with the Liliana. She had not yet joined the crew when Baron Theodore von Monocle first traveled to the Zenwey continent. She was referenced as someone who previously ran point ahead of the Baron on operations. She was known to keep detailed records and was described as always good with working the details of plans. She was lowborn and earned her noble name through military service, having served under Baron Theodore von Monocle's command before their relationship began.

Role in For Steam and Country

Early Events

At the opening of For Steam and Country, Talyen was accompanying Matthias du Gearsmith on official business, driving his horseless carriage and producing official scrolls upon arrival. She ushered James Gentry outside during a private meeting and demonstrated keen eyesight by spotting Wyranth soldiers in the dark, leaving the carriage to conduct reconnaissance. She advised Zaira von Monocle to claim she was a farmer if interrogated, and planned to rendezvous with the group in Loveridge.

Following the crash of the Liliana during a test flight—which occurred while Talyen was away gathering information—she returned to the inn and reprimanded Zaira harshly, stating that Baron von Monocle would have been extremely disappointed. She ordered Harkerpal to provide a cost and time estimate for repairs within the hour and directed Marina du Willet to purchase the fastest horse available to deliver a report to King Malaky XVI. She then marched out of the inn with military bearing.

Command and Operations

As captain of the Liliana, Talyen commanded a crew of commandos trained in acrobatics and rope-ladder techniques. She shot Major Anton to free Zaira from a knife-to-throat hostage situation and led the group to the deck for landing operations. She covered for Zaira when Zaira spoke out of turn to the king, and reported to King Malaky XVI that a legion of Wyranth soldiers had attacked and inflicted great damage to Plainsroad Village. She also presented the king with a captured Wyranth soldier carrying a vial of blue liquid.

When the king declined to authorize a rescue mission for Baron von Monocle, Talyen planned to disobey orders and mount an unauthorized search, informing Matthias du Gearsmith of the plan so he could notify the king and General Carwell. She ultimately agreed to lead the official mission against Wyranth forces in the northern provinces and requested that Zaira accompany her. She had kept the crew together for more than two years following the Baron's disappearance.

Rescue Mission and Imprisonment

Talyen devised the plan to infiltrate the Wyranth capital at nightfall using captured Wyranth uniforms and stolen papers validating patrol orders. She led the rescue team into the capital but was captured by Marina du Willet and Wyranth soldiers and deposited in the fourth cell of the Wyranth capital dungeon with one other prisoner. Zaira's ferret Toby retrieved Talyen's pen from her pack and brought it to Zaira, enabling communication.

When found in her cell, Talyen was sitting cross-legged with arms resting on her thighs, palms up, and eyes closed. She remained composed even when surprised. She subsequently stayed behind with Zaira to find Theodore rather than escaping with the others, barking orders at crew members to follow James Gentry.

Combat and Injury

During the mission, Talyen demonstrated considerable combat skill: she threw a knife into a Wyranth soldier's left eye, wrestled another soldier, and was used as a human shield. She stabbed a charging Wyranth soldier in the stomach and drew the blade upward. She was shot during a Wyranth charge, sustaining a single bullet wound to the shoulder, and fainted from blood loss. Baron Theodore von Monocle carried her out of the mountain over his shoulder. She was laid near a campfire with a Wyranth uniform jacket under her head and another covering her torso. Upon regaining consciousness she spoke weakly and winced in pain, stating she was not going anywhere now that Theo was back.

She was later given a dose of Vitality Ether and recovered sufficiently to command the Liliana again. She was nearly killed when a cannonball struck the starboard-aft roof of the bridge, collapsing her command post; she survived only because she had not yet reached her chair, being two feet from disaster.

Captain's Log

Talyen kept a detailed captain's log, wishing to chronicle every detail of the crew's adventures. Dated entries from the log appear in For Steam and Country, including entries from Day 9 of the Month of Princes, Day 33 of the Month of Kings, Day 40 of the Month of the Fool (17th Year of Malaky XVI's Reign), Day 23 of the Month of Dutchesses, Day 40 of the Month of Dutchesses (18th Year of Malaky XVI's Reign), and Day 4 of the Month of Dukes (18th Year of Malaky XVI's Reign). One log entry mentioned killing a Wyranth soldier and missing Theo; another recorded the promotion of Marina du Willet to Lieutenant Commander. Her log is referenced in In-World Books & Documents.

Role in The Blood of Giants

By the time of The Blood of Giants, Talyen had married Baron Theodore von Monocle in a quiet ceremony shortly after Zaira's return from her first mission. The wedding was performed by the king in Rislandia City. She was referred to as Talyen von Monocle, though she continued to use her maiden name von Cravat in professional contexts, holding the rank of Captain.

Talyen worked in the war room alongside Baron Theodore von Monocle, keeping track of army deployments and leaves and working in tandem with him. She was initially skeptical of the mission across the Golgmarsh Ocean but ultimately approved it with a three-week time limit. She referred to Zaira von Monocle as "Captain von Monocle" and expressed that she looked forward to Zaira's report. She told Zaira that friends often grow apart as they age and that she would find some nice young man and settle down.

At the time of the events of The Blood of Giants, Talyen was visibly pregnant, her belly swollen and growing rounder, and she walked with a waddle. She was present with Baron Theodore von Monocle to greet Zaira upon her return to Rislandia City, and was noted to be significantly rounder since Zaira had left. She informed Zaira that there was little time for resupply and that scientists had reverse-engineered exploding shells from the last mission.

Zaira counted Talyen among the two people she trusted most in the world, alongside her father. Zaira recalled Talyen's advice to breathe in and out slowly in tense situations, and wished Talyen had been present during a difficult escape situation to know what to do.

Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, Talyen worked alongside Baron Theodore von Monocle—by then holding the rank of General—in the war room, planning troop movements and logistics for the Grand Rislandian Army. She was aware, at least in part, of Zaira von Monocle's meetings with Ivan, the Iron Emperor. Zaira von Monocle was concerned for Talyen's safety given her location in Rislandia City.

When encountered in the war room, Talyen was seated in a chair, appearing pale with dark circles around her eyes and frazzled hair, and was heavily pregnant. Despite her condition, she expressed a clear preference for action over waiting: "I'd much rather be fighting. This is far more uncomfortable than having bullets shot in my direction." She was subsequently sent away with two soldiers to commandeer a horseless carriage toward the retreat point. Before departing, she kissed Baron Theodore von Monocle and waved off soldiers who offered assistance, waddling out under the protection of The High Knight of Rislandia, who followed her out.

Talyen gave birth to a baby girl named Lilly von Monocle during the Wyranth invasion, at Cliffside Castle. When Zaira von Monocle visited her afterward, Talyen was resting in a bed with fluffy pillows, her hair tangled and messy, her gown wrinkled, and her face without makeup—worn down in a way Zaira had never witnessed before. Talyen asked Zaira about the airship and told her that instinct would take over when holding a baby. She also warned Baron Theodore von Monocle not to go to the front lines, reminding him that he had spent two years in a Wyranth prison the last time he did something foolish, and noted that stress could be bad for his health at his age. She mentioned that if the worst came to pass, she could flee to Atrebla on one of the ships. Her eyes were described as bright with affection when she looked at Theo.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, Talyen had fully recovered from childbirth and returned to fighting shape, her form well-defined in her Grand Rislandian Army grey uniform with cap. She wore a brass pendant of the Crest of Malaky on her right breast and the Rislandian Medal of Valor on her left breast.

Talyen was present in Rislandia City at the palace and greeted Zaira von Monocle outside the palace on her return. She grabbed Zaira's hand and navigated through the palace corridors with purpose, people naturally parting for her as she moved. She was present at the round table meeting and was seated in the Rislandian delegation at the wedding alongside James Gentry, Marina du Willet, and Queen Reina I.

Talyen was listed among the best advisors in Rislandia, alongside Zaira's father and Matthias du Gearsmith, and served as an advisor to Queen Reina I. Zaira von Monocle referenced her as someone more dexterous than herself, and used a changeling net to take on Talyen's appearance—made possible by Talyen's distinctive features of long dark hair and a slightly more pointed face with higher cheekbones than Zaira's own.

Talyen carried baby Lilly von Monocle and told Zaira she should visit Lilly more. She agreed to take in Toby the ferret for Lilly, though she was warned to be careful with ferrets around the baby. She had also grown fond of Toby. She smiled at Baron Theodore von Monocle's comment about missions and sighed when Zaira announced her decision. She kept her composure stoically at the funeral procession. Zaira named Talyen among those she already missed after departing, alongside Harkerpal, Colwell, and others.

In the short stories

In Tangled Web, after the Baron's disappearance at the Border River, Captain von Cravat ("the Baron's former lover who had taken command of the ship") calls off a three-week search. She grounds the Liliana at the edge of Loveridge "until she could speak with King Malaky". She is mentioned only.

In A History of Rislandia

A History of Rislandia treats Talyen von Cravat as a notable example of an earned noble in Rislandia, citing her as proof that the kingdom's title system could reward merit over birth. The sourcebook describes her as "disciplined, fiercely loyal, and a tactical genius" and quotes Baron Theodore von Monocle calling her "my quick-witted second in command."

Origins and Early Service

According to A History of Rislandia, Talyen began her career aboard the Liliana not as a soldier but as a chef's assistant. She was promoted directly to first officer after Theodore recognised her exceptional marksmanship and tactical mind—a detail not mentioned in the novels, which describe her lowborn origins and military rise without specifying her starting role aboard the ship. The sourcebook presents her promotion from chef's assistant to first officer as the foundational step in her ascent, and uses her as a named example when discussing how noble titles could be earned through service in Rislandia.

The sourcebook also attributes to Talyen the coining of the Grand Rislandian Air Force's famous battle cry. According to A History of Rislandia, she overheard Baron Theodore von Monocle and Harkerpal brainstorming and—while carrying a bucket of hot water—suggested the phrase "For Steam and Country." The sourcebook records this as the origin of the cry later associated with the Liliana and the broader Rislandian air service. See also The Battlecry of the Liliana.

Role During Theodore's Disappearance

A History of Rislandia records that Talyen commanded the Liliana as acting captain throughout the period of Baron Theodore von Monocle's disappearance, continuing his captain's log and leading commando operations while the ship was grounded. The sourcebook notes that she processed her grief through violence and states she was Theodore's closest confidant and lover during this period, though the relationship was not publicly acknowledged. It records her as having been furious that Theodore bequeathed the Liliana to Zaira von Monocle.

Promotion to Commodore and Command of the Air Force

According to A History of Rislandia, Talyen was promoted to Commodore and given command of Rislandia's newly formed Grand Rislandian Air Force. She holds the role of Commodore and overall commander of the Grand Rislandian Air Force.

The Nightmen Invasion and Birth of Lilly

A History of Rislandia records that Talyen was heavily pregnant during the two-front invasion and was evacuated to Cliffside Castle for safety, where she gave birth to Lilly von Monocle. One passage attributes the birth to the Wyranth invasion; another passage attributes it to the Nightmen invasion. This internal inconsistency within the sourcebook is noted here without resolution. The novel-based account on this page, following the novels, places the birth during the Wyranth invasion.

Standing in Rislandian History

The sourcebook presents Talyen explicitly as a case study in earned nobility, listing her under the heading "Captain Talyen von Cravat: Earned her title and was promoted to Commodore." It characterises her as one of the finest officers Rislandia has produced and notes that she knew Theodore better than anyone.
