Cid
Titles: Master Knight; High Knight of the Crystal Spire; High Knight of Rislandia
Cid was a veteran member of the Knights of the Crystal Spire, the elite warrior order that served as Rislandia's special forces and bodyguards to the crown. Described as a middle-aged man of sturdy frame with a short beard and dark hair, he was known for his calm tactical judgment, his eye for athletic talent, and his willingness to defer leadership for strategic or symbolic reasons. He trained multiple apprentices, including James Gentry and Ethan von Lantern, and participated in dangerous field operations across multiple campaigns. He held no family outside the knighthood, having dedicated his entire life to the order, and by the later stages of the war managed the entire group of Knights of the Crystal Spire himself as the conflict escalated. Queen Reina I relied on him for military advice, and he was regarded as the appropriate authority for coordinating the Knights in sensitive operations.
Description
Cid was taller than James Gentry and was described as naturally imposing. His eyes were noted to sparkle when he was in his element as a trainer and knight. He was described as an older knight in earlier books, with wrinkles on his forehead betraying his age; however, in The Steam Knight 2, he was estimated to be in his mid-thirties, with a sturdy frame, short beard, and dark hair. By the time of The Steam Knight, the war had visibly aged him, leaving specks of white and gray in his hair and a drooping quality to his eyes. He sat behind a desk in a small office overlooking the training courtyard at the Crystal Spire and had quarters in the barracks. He was noted to drink ale in the common mess and, in The Steam Knight 2, to drink coffee with a small amount of milk. He hummed when working independently and kept a large stack of papers and a map of Rislandia focused on knight deployments in his office.
In combat, James Gentry observed that Cid showed speed and precision beyond anyone he had ever encountered—man or monster.
Role in For Steam and Country
Training James Gentry
In For Steam and Country, Cid was assigned to train James Gentry in swordsmanship. He taught James how to hold a sword properly, praised his wide stance, and told him he had good raw strength. After their training session, Cid bowed to James. During this period, Cid passed Zaira von Monocle without seeming to notice her, and James returned to conversation with Cid after Zaira departed. The two were together in sword practice clothes when an earthquake struck.
Cid referred to James as his apprentice and described him as a quick study.
Proving James Worthy
James bested Cid in combat in order to prove himself worthy of participating in the rescue mission.
The Wyranth Mission
Cid traveled with James and Frances to the Wyranth capital. He was one of the knights traveling with Zaira von Monocle's group during the infiltration. During the mission, he told a guard that the group was escorting the sergeant's concubines, providing cover for the party. He also nodded to Zaira's father after Sergeant Wilheim was stuffed into a crate.
During the fighting, Cid fired return shots at Wyranth soldiers, collapsing four of them, and laid down suppression fire while backing into the staging room. He flanked Zaira's side to shield her during a confrontation, warned James to get down after Frances fell, and made hand motions with James and Baron Theodore von Monocle in the darkness.
Cid tended to Talyen von Cravat's wound by tying a fabric bandage tightly around her shoulder and advised against removing the bullet due to infection risk. He helped carry Talyen out through the exhaust shaft.
Cid carried a canteen attached to his belt. He warned James not to fire the flare gun yet, explaining they had only one shot and must wait for nightfall, then watched the flare with James afterward.
Following the mission, Cid suggested leaving the city with the Liliana's crew. He was present at the forest camp, seated across the fire from James, and fired his own rounds at returning Wyranth soldiers. He nodded approvingly as James recounted events.
Role in The Blood of Giants
In The Blood of Giants, James Gentry recalled that Cid had personally trained him at the start of his apprenticeship, confirming the foundational nature of their mentor–student relationship established in For Steam and Country.
Role in The Fight for Rislandia
Recruiting Ethan von Lantern
In The Fight for Rislandia, it was established that Cid had previously stopped by Ethan von Lantern's boarding school in Rislandia City, where he spotted Ethan's athletic abilities and tested him for entry into the Knights of the Crystal Spire. Ethan later recalled this event in his own words: "Cid stopped by the school one day, spotted my athletic abilities, and tested me for entry into the knights."
At the Crash Site
Cid was among the knights present at the crash site when the protagonist was rescued, and was recognized by Ethan upon arrival.
Field Operations
During the campaign, Cid sat behind Ethan in the horseless carriage and told Ethan to stay in the driver's seat so the group could move quickly. He produced a spyglass and looked toward an approaching force from the forest, identifying them as Rislandian by their lack of Wyranth helms. He also pulled Ethan out of the way of a giant creature during combat.
When praised, Cid inclined his head but did not appear smug. He cleared his throat and reported that the army was pressing forward toward Rislandia City.
Deference to Zaira and Strategic Counsel
Cid deferred leadership to Zaira von Monocle for symbolic reasons during the push toward Rislandia City. He praised Zaira's leadership capabilities and suggested that a von Monocle leading the charge into the city would carry symbolic weight, stating: "It would make for a good symbolic moment for a von Monocle to lead the charge into Rislandia City."
Regarding a prisoner, Cid stated that knocking out the prisoner and leaving him without weapons was the plan.
Reporting to Command
Following the mission depicted in The Fight for Rislandia, James Gentry and Ethan von Lantern were noted to need to check in with Cid and the High Knight, though no further details were given about that meeting.

Role in The Steam Knight
Administrative and Training Duties
In The Steam Knight, Cid was referred to as "Master Knight Cid" and "master knight," functioning as the senior figure overseeing apprentice training at the Crystal Spire. He called matches during sparring sessions, assigned copying and scribe work to apprentices, and announced contestants at the apprentice competition. He called for a nurse when a competitor named Lawrence was injured during the competition.
Cid was overheard praising James Gentry with the words: "Pure unrefined talent like I've never seen!" He patted James on the back in congratulations after his match. He was noted to drink ale in the common mess and had quarters in the barracks. He sat behind a desk in a small office overlooking the training courtyard when conducting official business.
James noted that Cid and other knights became annoyed when James asked to use their devices at the Crystal Spire, though James believed Cid would have granted him permission to have a gun.
The Lou Situation
Cid had a suspicion that something was amiss with Lou and warned James Gentry that pursuing Lou alone was foolish. He told James that the knights were a fraternity and brothers, emphasizing the importance of solidarity within the order. He visited James in the infirmary following an incident connected to the Lou situation.
Selecting James and Ethan
Cid selected James Gentry to work directly with Ethan von Lantern. He stood immediately when King Malaky XVI entered the room. He expressed reluctance about sending Ethan and James on their mission without more experienced leadership, and told them to rest and depart at dawn, stating that time was of the essence regarding Lou.
Cid was present at the square at departure. He had a case at his feet containing weapons and handed out a sword, pistols, and a rotary gun to the group. He briefed the group on battle protocol regarding knights and infantry, and introduced Sergeant Lansing and Lieutenant Fearson to James. He expressed concern for the group's safety and was described as caring about the group as family, like children. His farewell to the departing group was: "For steam and country."
The Journeyman Promotion
Cid led the journeyman promotion ritual at the Crystal Spire, possessing authority invested by the High Knight and King Malaky XVI to grant promotions. By this point in the narrative, he had aged visibly during the war, with specks of white and gray hair and drooping eyes.
Debriefing and New Assignments
Following the completion of the Lou mission, Cid received a courier with news that the mission was complete. Two days after James and Ethan's return, he summoned them to his office. He wrinkled his forehead as he considered Ethan's report. He listened to James and Ethan's full account before examining the documents recovered from Dr. Metzengerstein's laboratory. He confirmed that the documents supported Major Edwin Ral's reports about the spider-like woman, and noted that the army brass had previously thought Ral was shell-shocked.
Cid mentioned struggles in the rebuilding effort related to airships, stating that the Liliana was mostly reconstructed but that an element of the engine prevented it from lifting off, and that scientists were baffled because the engine looked the same. He commended James and Ethan for recovering what they could and said the army's intelligence division would be eager to receive the information. He expressed interest in mechanized units and said James and Ethan would be the first he would suggest for a mission to Nyanzi.
Cid told James: "James, you're going to go places in the knights." He assigned James and Ethan to escort civilians to Plainsroad Village for farming, stated he needed to report to the High Knight and the palace staff, and shook hands with both James and Ethan before they departed. He also briefed James and Ethan on a mission to Loveridge and had an office in which he met with knights and Lieutenant Ral. He noted that he needed all master knights out on patrol and expressed confidence in James and Ethan's capabilities based on how they had handled the Lou situation. He also assigned them a new mission to the Zicree Continent.

Personality
Cid approached every situation with strategic thinking, considering the broader implications of every deployment. In the field, he demonstrated calm tactical judgment—managing suppression fire, advising on medical decisions, carefully timing the use of limited resources such as the flare gun, and identifying approaching forces by visual detail. He was stern but fair, and accepted praise with quiet dignity rather than pride. He showed a willingness to subordinate his own authority to symbolic or morale considerations when the situation called for it. He cared deeply about those under his command, described as treating them like family and like children, and his honesty was noted to sometimes supersede his ability to keep himself measured around them. He had no family outside the knighthood, having dedicated his entire life to the order. In combat, he demonstrated speed and precision that James Gentry described as beyond anyone he had ever encountered—man or monster.

In A History of Rislandia
According to A History of Rislandia, Cid is presented in his capacity as the current commanding officer of the Knights of the Crystal Spire, identified by the titles High Knight and High Knight of the Crystal Spire. The sourcebook characterises him as a veteran knight and the leader of the Crystal Spire order, describing him as having mentored generations of knights—a framing notably broader than the novels, which name only James Gentry and Ethan von Lantern as his apprentices. The bible's phrase "generations of knights" implies a longer or more prolific mentoring career than the novels depict.
The sourcebook also confirms that Cid holds the rank of Master Knight concurrently with the rank of High Knight, consistent with his dual styling in the novels.
In terms of character, A History of Rislandia summarises Cid with the phrase "stern but fair, upholds the knightly code," which aligns with his portrayal across the novels but is here rendered as a formal scholarly characterisation rather than a quality observed through a protagonist's perspective. No additional biographical detail, family history, or origin information is provided beyond what the novels establish.
