Border River
The Border River was a major geographical and military landmark forming the boundary between Rislandia and the Wyranth Empire. It was described as much grander than any river Zaira von Monocle had seen in her lifetime, suggesting a waterway of considerable scale and breadth. According to lore recorded in The Blood of Giants, when The Crystal Spire was first built, people said one could see all the way to the Border River from its top, further attesting to the river's prominence as a landmark across Rislandian territory.
The area around the Border River had been in dispute between Rislandia and Wyranth for generations. As noted in The Iron Wedding, the character Andrei Zelezo stated: "The area around the Border River has been in dispute since we were children."
Overview
The Border River served as the formal territorial dividing line between Rislandian and Wyranth lands. Its strategic importance made it a persistent flashpoint during the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The Wyranth Military maintained a strong defensive presence along its banks, including Wyranth anti-airship artillery positioned to deter or destroy any Rislandian airships attempting to cross. In The Blood of Giants, at least one such artillery piece was described as positioned on a hill overlooking the Border River.
Rislandia's army was also deployed along the Border River at various points during the war, including at least one occasion when such a deployment was part of a Wyranth feint, drawing Rislandian forces to the river as a diversion.
At the time of The Iron Wedding, the road between the Wyranth Capital and Loveridge crossed the Border River by means of a makeshift bridge. The bridge was of sufficient age or disrepair that a carriage crossing it bounced noticeably, and at least one automaton fell into the river when its foot became caught in a bridge plank. Ivan, the Iron Emperor, also held construction plans for additional bridges along the Border River, and sought tillable land north of the river as part of a prospective peace settlement with Rislandia.
History
1st Battle at Border River
The 1st Battle at Border River took place in the 15th Year of King Malaky XVI's reign. Details of this engagement are limited, but it was among the earliest major confrontations at the river during the reign of King Malaky XVI and established the Border River as a primary front in the Rislandia–Wyranth conflict.
Battle Two Years Before For Steam and Country
Two years before the events of For Steam and Country, the Border River was the site of a major and devastating battle between Rislandian and Wyranth forces. The casualties were so severe that the river was reported to have run red for three full days afterward: "Such bloodshed occurred that it's been said the river ran red for three full days." It was during this engagement that Baron Theodore von Monocle disappeared, and The Liliana went down at the river.
2nd Battle of the Border River
The Second Battle of the Border River took place in the 17th Year of King Malaky XVI's reign. In The Blood of Giants, this battle was referenced in connection with events of that period. During or around this engagement, the battle migrated across the Border River and into Wyranth territory. The Liliana made an emergency landing on the Rislandian side of the Border River during this period of conflict.
Role in For Steam and Country
The Border River featured prominently throughout For Steam and Country as both a physical obstacle and a symbol of the war's dangers.
The river could be faintly seen from the deck of the Liliana while the airship was above Loveridge, establishing its proximity to Rislandian-held territory. During the Liliana's test flight, the airship crossed the Border River, at which point it came under fire from Wyranth forces: "We're in Wyranth territory. Past the Border River." This crossing marked the crew's entry into enemy lands.
Baron von Monocle's log referenced the Border River as the location of a mission he described in stark terms: "Our new assignment is but a suicide mission over the Border River." This entry underscored the extreme danger associated with any operation in the area.
In a separate engagement recorded in the Baron's log, Wyranth soldiers were observed escorting a supply wagon along the river's banks. Baron von Monocle's team descended from above to retrieve the wagon, as noted in the text: "They escorted it down the banks of the Border River."
Talyen von Cravat's log also referenced the Border River in connection with a directive from King Malaky XVI, who wished to strike the Wyranth there in order to send a message: "to send them a message at the border river."
Role in The Blood of Giants
In The Blood of Giants, the Border River continued to serve as a central military objective. A log entry dated Day 34 of the Month of Princes, 3rd Year of King Malaky XVI's Reign referenced the river in connection with an earlier mission. The Liliana was assigned to deliver a squad of the Knights of the Crystal Spire to the Border River: "we have a simple mission: to deliver a squad of the Knights of the Crystal Spire to the Border River."
During the events of The Blood of Giants, the Liliana made an emergency landing on the Rislandian side of the Border River, and the battle in progress migrated across the river and into Wyranth territory. Wyranth anti-airship artillery was positioned on a hill "overlooking the Border River," continuing the pattern of heavy Wyranth fortification along the waterway.
Rislandia's army was deployed along the Border River as part of a Wyranth feint, indicating that the Wyranth used the river's strategic prominence to manipulate Rislandian troop movements.
Role in The Fight for Rislandia
In The Fight For Rislandia, the Border River again featured as an active military front. Baron von Monocle's log recorded a Wyranth advance along the river: "There has been reports of a Wyranth advance along the Border River." In response to this threat, James Gentry directed the narrator to push the Wyranth back across the Border River, underscoring the waterway's continued role as the defining boundary of the conflict.
Role in The Iron Wedding
In The Iron Wedding, the Border River appeared in both diplomatic and physical contexts. The character Andrei Zelezo—who was in fact Ivan, the Iron Emperor disguised by a changeling net—acknowledged the river's long-contested status, stating that the area around it had been in dispute since his childhood.
A party traveling the road between the Wyranth Capital and Loveridge crossed the Border River via a makeshift bridge: "We crossed a makeshift bridge that stretched across the Border River." The crossing was rough enough that the carriage bounced, and at least one automaton fell into the river when its foot caught in a bridge plank.
In diplomatic negotiations, Ivan sought territorial concessions north of the Border River as part of a peace settlement with Rislandia, specifically "letting the Wyranth have some of the tillable area north of the Border River." He also held construction plans for bridges along the river, suggesting an intent to improve infrastructure and access across the boundary.

Military Significance
The Border River was heavily fortified on the Wyranth side, with anti-airship ballistic devices lined along its length, including emplacements on elevated terrain overlooking the water. Any Rislandian airship attempting to cross faced immediate engagement from these emplacements. The river's role as a natural boundary made it the primary front line of the aerial and ground conflict between the two nations, and operations in its vicinity were considered among the most hazardous assignments available to Rislandian forces. Its use as a staging point for the delivery of the Knights of the Crystal Spire and as a site of multiple named battles confirmed its enduring centrality to the war effort on both sides.
The existence of a makeshift bridge on the road between the Wyranth Capital and Loveridge, as described in The Iron Wedding, indicates that at least one crossing point existed along the river's length, though its condition suggested it was not a permanent or heavily maintained structure.
On the world map
The official world map does not label the river by name. A red line across the Rislandia-Wyranth Peninsula separates yellow Rislandia from green Wyranth.
In A History of Rislandia
According to A History of Rislandia, the Border River has a history stretching back to the earliest days of the Rislandian and Wyranth peoples, far predating the conflicts depicted in the novels.
Origins and Geography
According to A History of Rislandia, the Border River is located on the southern side of the Westerly Spine, which the sourcebook notes continues past the river southward into Wyranth territory. The region surrounding it is described as harsh and volcanic. The river flows from the Wyranth Mountains to the Golgmarsh Ocean, and its width varies from 100 to 500 feet. It is characterized as wide and fast-flowing, generally too deep to ford, with a strong current that makes swimming dangerous. Bridges are described as few and heavily fortified, and control of the bridges is stated to determine control of the border.
The sourcebook identifies the Southern Borderlands as the contested territory running along the river, and notes that the Border Road runs parallel to the river. A fortified border town called Borderville is situated near the river.
According to A History of Rislandia, it was Wyranth Ashenblade himself who first settled on the southern side of the Border River, in the volcanic southern region, establishing the geographic and cultural division between the two peoples from the very beginning.
Early History and the Border River Conflict
According to A History of Rislandia, Wyranth Ashenblade began building fortifications along the Border River during the reign of King Malaky III. Wyranth forces subsequently crossed the river during what the sourcebook calls the Border River Conflict, claiming lands on the northern bank. Battles were fought along the river throughout this conflict, with Rislandian forces holding the northern bank. The conflict was ultimately resolved by the Treaty of Lake Bethany in Year 182, under which the Border River became the official boundary between Rislandia and Wyranth. The treaty required both kingdoms to fortify their respective sides of the river and established a demilitarized zone of 500 feet on each bank.
Later Dynastic History
According to A History of Rislandia, small skirmishes erupted along the Border River during the reign of King Malaky VIII. After Year 340, Wyranth forces retreated south of the river. Under King Malaky XI, Rislandian forces built a defensive line along the Border River. In Year 375, Wyranth crossed the river again using crystal-enhanced weapons, but the river held firm during the Wyranth War of Years 437-442.
During the reign of King Malaky XV, the sourcebook records a massive three-pronged Wyranth invasion at the Border River; the Wyranth were ultimately driven back across it after the final battle of that campaign.
The Reign of King Malaky XVI
According to A History of Rislandia, the Border River became a heavily fortified boundary in Year 1 of King Malaky XVI's reign. In Year 3, the Knights of the Crystal Spire were deployed to the river for border patrol — consistent with the novels' account of the Liliana delivering a squad of Knights to the Border River, though the sourcebook frames this as a broader Year 3 deployment rather than a single mission.
The sourcebook records that Zaira von Monocle flew too close to the Border River on her first flight, and that King Malaky XVI wanted to send the Wyranth a message at the Border River — details that align with events depicted in For Steam and Country. It also records that Wyranth soldiers escorted a captured supply wagon down the river's banks, and that The Liliana conducted commando raids along it.
The sourcebook further states that the Fantasy War (Years 375-383) saw coordinated Wyranth attacks along the river's entire length, and that the Second Battle of the Border River took place in Year 17 of King Malaky XVI's reign. In Year 18, Rislandia held the Border River but could not push south.
According to A History of Rislandia, crossing the Border River without authorization is considered an act of war, and patrols monitor the river constantly on both sides.
