Overview

King Malaky XII, epithet 'the Peacemaker,' was the twelfth ruler of the Malaky Dynasty and one of the longest-reigning monarchs of his era. According to A History of Rislandia, he was categorized among the Good Kings — a distinction reserved for rulers whose reigns were judged to have benefited Rislandia on balance. Diplomatic, pragmatic, cultured, and idealistic by nature, Malaky XII believed war to be wasteful and pursued peaceful solutions wherever possible. His thirty-three-year reign (Years 356–389) was defined by an early era of hard-won peace, a costly war he could not prevent, and a determined effort to heal his kingdom in the years that followed.

Early Reign and the Peace Treaty with Wyranth

Malaky XII ascended to the throne in Year 356 as the son of King Malaky XI. One of his first and most consequential acts was the negotiation of a twenty-year peace treaty with the Wyranth Empire, concluded at the outset of his reign and covering the period from Year 356 to Year 375. According to A History of Rislandia, this agreement reflected his core conviction that armed conflict was a wasteful and avoidable instrument of statecraft. The treaty brought a generation of relative stability to the Rislandia–Wyranth frontier and allowed the kingdom to develop culturally and economically during the peace years.

The Fantasy War (Years 375–383)

Despite his efforts, the peace did not hold beyond its agreed term. In Year 375, hostilities resumed, and Malaky XII found himself presiding over the Fantasy War (Years 375–383). The conflict lasted eight years and exacted a severe personal toll on the king: according to A History of Rislandia, his son died during the fighting. The war concluded in Year 383 with the negotiation of the Treaty of Greenhorne, which Malaky XII secured through diplomacy consistent with his lifelong approach to statecraft.

Post-War Reconstruction

Following the Treaty of Greenhorne, Malaky XII turned his attention to healing the kingdom. According to A History of Rislandia, he oversaw the rebuilding of towns destroyed during the war, funded pensions for veterans, encouraged the arts and culture, and worked to restore trade. These efforts reflected both his pragmatic and idealistic character and cemented his reputation as a ruler who prioritized the welfare of his people over martial glory.

Death and Succession

Malaky XII died peacefully at the age of seventy-five in Year 389. Because his son had perished during the Fantasy War (Years 375–383), the throne passed not to a direct son but to his grandson, who succeeded him as King Malaky XIII.

Legacy

According to A History of Rislandia, Malaky XII is counted among the Good Kings of the Malaky Dynasty. His epithet 'the Peacemaker' reflects both the treaty that opened his reign and the reconstruction that closed it. Though he could not prevent the Fantasy War (Years 375–383), his diplomatic instincts shaped how it ended and how the kingdom recovered. His reign stands as a predecessor to the later dynastic line that would eventually produce King Malaky XVI, in whose era the novels of The Adventures of Baron Von Monocle are set.
