Sergeant Lansing

Sergeant Lansing

Sergeant Lansing was a non-commissioned officer serving in the Grand Rislandian Army during the 2nd Wyranth War. He is prominently featured in The Fight for Rislandia, where he commanded a unit of nearly a dozen Rislandian soldiers and contributed directly to the operation involving The Big Bomb, and later appears in The Steam Knight, where he served as one of two Grand Rislandian Army soldiers assigned to a covert mission and sustained a serious gunshot wound.

Overview

Lansing held the rank of Sergeant and was referred to as an infantryman. He was a capable and enthusiastic soldier who demonstrated initiative in the field. His familiarity with both Baron Theodore von Monocle and Zaira von Monocle suggests prior service across multiple engagements, including those spanning from Portsgate to Borderville. He referred to Wyranth Empire soldiers as "mutants" on account of their ingestion of giant's blood serum.

In The Steam Knight, Lansing was described as having a fully-grown beard. He wore a gray uniform with a pendant of the Crest of Malaky above the right breast and a matching cap with a smaller pendant, and carried a rifle strapped to his back.

Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, Lansing commanded a unit of nearly a dozen Rislandian soldiers when he encountered General von Monocle in the street. He saluted the General upon meeting him and reported that the main line was not faring well, warning that the Wyranth military had committed too many forces to the engagement.

When General von Monocle presented the bomb plan, Lansing expressed immediate enthusiasm for it. He located The Big Bomb in a storehouse and rapped his knuckles against it to assess its weight. He then selected three soldiers — Singhal, Jennings, and Babb — to accompany him inside the storehouse, and subsequently finished securing the bomb to the ropes from The Liliana. General von Monocle ordered Lansing to guard Zaira von Monocle and the bomb until both were safely aboard the airship. Lansing also ordered his men to fan out and secure the building. When Wyranth forces attacked, he shouted for the group to hurry and move out.

Lansing was later encountered by Zaira inside Cliffside Castle, where he recognized her despite her plain uniform, having previously met her in Rislandia City. He saluted her on that occasion. He told her that spirits had lifted considerably when news spread that the airship had landed, and he spoke of General von Monocle's reputation for saving the day, citing engagements from Portsgate to Borderville.

"Glad to see you, General von Monocle."

"Spirits lifted quite a bit here just hearing the airship landed."

Role in The Steam Knight

In The Steam Knight, Lansing was one of two Grand Rislandian Army soldiers assigned to a mission alongside Ethan von Lantern, James Gentry, and Lieutenant Fearson. He was introduced to the group by Cid.

Lansing was assigned to keep watch at camp while Ethan, James, and Fearson scouted ahead. During this watch, he fell asleep. He was notably closer with Fearson than with Ethan or James, and was rattled by the prospect of losing him. On the morning of the assault, Lansing kept quiet.

During the operation, Lansing drew his pistol in the basement and coughed from a smoke bomb. He fired blindly up the stairs, wounding a large man on the stairwell. Before that man collapsed, he shot Lansing in the shoulder. Lansing crumpled to the floor in pain and sat unmoving against the wall with a pool of blood forming beneath him and his eyes closed.

Ethan tied fabric from his tunic around the wound to stop the bleeding. The bullet could not be removed until a doctor was found in Loveridge. Lansing was tended to by the doctor before James Gentry was revived.

"Gentry, you scared me."

"I'll live. Hurts like none other."
