Wyranth Ashenblade
Wyranth Ashenblade was one of the most consequential figures of the post-Sundering age, a former master of the Pyrean Order whose iron philosophy of strength and concentrated authority set him irrevocably apart from Jory Malaky and ultimately gave rise to the nation that would become Rislandia's eternal rival.
Overview
According to A History of Rislandia, Wyranth Ashenblade was 32 years of age when the Great Sundering occurred. He had served as a master within the Pyrean Order, aligning himself with its purist faction, and had fought against practitioners of blood magic during the purge that preceded the Sundering. When Solarias burned, he escaped the city at the head of a group of refugees and guild survivors, preserving both lives and a measure of institutional knowledge from the old world.
Description
According to A History of Rislandia, Ashenblade was lean in build, with hard features scarred from years of battle and piercing gray eyes. He was known for pragmatism, ruthlessness when necessary, and brilliant military tactics. Though spiritual in disposition, he remained skeptical of organized religion.
History
Escape from Solarias and the Road West
Following the fall of Solarias, Ashenblade led his band of refugees westward. According to A History of Rislandia, he encountered Jory Malaky in approximately Year 545 among the ruins of Aquilae. The two leaders recognized a shared purpose—reaching the west—and formed an alliance, pooling their followers and resources for the journey.
Co-Leadership of the Early Settlement
In the first decade of the western settlement, Ashenblade and Jory Malaky ruled jointly, making decisions by consensus. According to A History of Rislandia, Ashenblade advocated rebuilding civilization on the foundations of strength and order, with absolute concentrated leadership at its core. This vision aligned with Malaky's on the question of destination but diverged sharply on matters of governance and obligation to outsiders.
The Schism and Departure
By Year 11, the philosophical differences between the two co-leaders had grown irreconcilable. The immediate point of rupture was the question of accepting new refugees. Ashenblade argued against admitting them, citing limited resources and the duty owed to those already under his protection. When Malaky chose to accept the newcomers, Ashenblade declared:
"I will not follow a man who sacrifices his own people for strangers. If you lead with weakness, I will lead with strength."
In Year 11, Ashenblade departed with approximately 3,000 followers. He marched south, crossed the Westerly Spine mountains, and led his people beyond the Border River into the volcanic southern region, where they settled and began to build.
Legacy and the Wyranth Nation
According to A History of Rislandia, the settlements Ashenblade founded became the nucleus of the nation that would stand as Rislandia's eternal rival. The Wyranth confederation of city-states was united under Wyranth Ashenblade's descendants by the time of King Malaky III's reign, cementing the Ashenblade line as the founding dynasty of the Wyranth Empire.
Legacy
Wyranth Ashenblade's insistence on strength, order, and concentrated authority shaped the political and military character of the nation that bore his name. The Wyranth Schism he precipitated in Year 11 established the foundational antagonism between the two successor civilizations of the exodus, an antagonism that persisted across centuries of conflict including the First Wyranth War, the Fantasy War (Years 375-383), and the Wyranth War of Years 437-442.
