Overview

Bishop Marcus the Faithful was one of the most consequential religious figures in early Rislandian history. A senior bishop of the faith at the time of the collapse of Orethan Dominion authority, he refused to submit to the puppet High Priest installed by Emperor Nerovan the Mad and instead cast his lot with the refugees who would eventually found Rislandia. According to A History of Rislandia, he was 55 years of age at the time of the Great Gathering. He would go on to become the first High Priest of Rislandia's Church.

History

Defiance and the Great Gathering

When Emperor Nerovan the Mad moved to place a puppet High Priest over the faithful, Bishop Marcus refused to serve under the appointee, aligning himself instead with those who rejected Nerovan's authority. He emerged as one of the key leaders at Petra Magna, where the refugee community began to coalesce into an organized body. His spiritual standing lent legitimacy and moral direction to the nascent exodus movement.

The Oler Pass Crossing

During the harrowing crossing of the Oler Pass, Bishop Marcus served as the moral anchor of the refugee column. According to A History of Rislandia, he forbade cannibalism absolutely, holding the community to ethical standards even under extreme duress. On Day 25 of the crossing, he raised his hands and spoke to rally the refugees, delivering words that became emblematic of the exodus's spiritual character:

"The Great One did not bring us here to fail. He will carry us through."

He also approached the Hill Folk village alongside Jory Malaky, unarmed, demonstrating the peaceful intent that helped secure relations with the indigenous people of the region.

Declaration of Holy Ground

Upon the discovery of an air crystal deposit, Bishop Marcus declared the site holy ground, an act that carried profound implications for the spiritual and material development of the future kingdom. This declaration linked the air crystals to the faith of the Great One from the earliest days of Rislandian settlement.

Joint Rule and Counsel

During the period of joint rule between Jory Malaky and the Wyranth leadership, Bishop Marcus served as a spiritual advisor, counseling both parties on matters of faith and conscience. His role bridged the religious and political spheres of the early settlement, reinforcing the close relationship between the Church of the Great One and the emerging Malaky governing structure.

Coronation of Cedric Malaky

Bishop Marcus performed the coronation of King Malaky I (Cedric Malaky) atop the Crystal Spire. At the ceremony, he delivered the following charge, recorded verbatim in A History of Rislandia:

"You are chosen by the people, blessed by the Great One, and sworn to serve the kingdom. You are not above the law, but its first servant. Rule with wisdom, justice, and humility."

This declaration established a foundational principle of Rislandian kingship — that the monarch was servant to the law rather than its master — and the words were attributed directly to Bishop Marcus as the presiding religious authority.

Consecration of the Great Temple

In Year 20, Bishop Marcus consecrated the Great Temple to the Great One, marking a formal institutionalization of the faith that had sustained the refugees through the exodus. This act cemented his legacy as the architect of organized religion in Rislandia.

Legacy

Bishop Marcus the Faithful held the title of first High Priest of Rislandia's Church, a position he had earned through decades of leadership, sacrifice, and moral authority. His nephew, Marcus II, later stood as a candidate in the election for High Priest, suggesting that the family retained religious prominence into subsequent generations. The coronation words Bishop Marcus spoke over Cedric Malaky endured as a touchstone of Rislandian political theology, and his declaration of the air crystal deposit as holy ground shaped the kingdom's relationship with crystal resources from its founding.
