Devil's Mountain
Devil's Mountain was a mountain located behind the Wyranth Empire capital. Its name, according to Zaira von Monocle's father, may have had a very real meaning. The Wyranth cored out the mountain's center to create an enormous internal chamber, converting the site into a secret laboratory housing an evolved giant and the machinery used to extract vitality ether from it. The facility also contained most of the Wyranth's serum reserves at the time of its destruction. In The Iron Wedding, the mountain was described as looming as a dark shadow behind the Wyranth capital, visible from inside the city walls in daylight. It blocked the view of smoke rising from the Wyranth capital city and was located near the capital from the perspective of someone approaching from Rislandia.
Description
From the outside, Devil's Mountain showed signs of its hidden purpose. The area surrounding the exhaust shaft that vented from within was entirely dead, with no surviving foliage. No villages or people occupied the side of the mountain where the exhaust shaft exited. A dense forest lay beyond this dead zone. During the night battle at the mountain, the interior glowed, illuminating Wyranth soldiers below from within.
The mountain had an aperture at its base. Internally, the Wyranth had hollowed it to create a vast central chamber containing a central pit where the evolved giant was kept. The location was described as hollow after only a few feet of penetration. A tunnel dug by the Liliana crew as an alternate route into the creature's chamber was described as disgusting.
In The Blood of Giants, it was noted that giants were said to have burrowed into Devil's Mountain, suggesting the mountain's hollowed interior may have had origins or associations beyond Wyranth engineering alone.
In The Iron Wedding, it was established that the mountain could be accessed via a dungeon below the Wyranth Palace, and that it had a tunnel leading outside to the opposite side of the mountain.
The Central Chamber
The central chamber contained the pit housing the evolved giant, as well as the extraction machinery and a large crane.
The Machine
A machine located in the central chamber had vast tubes protruding into the pit, which extracted glowing azure goo—the vitality ether, also referred to as the giant's blood serum—from the creature. The machine whirred during operation and featured a large valve requiring tremendous strength to operate. Wyranth soldiers carried large buckets to collect the extracted goo.
The Crane
A large crane with several brass gears on its side hung over the pit. Its gears turned to lift a crate attached to a long rope. The crane also featured a robust steam exhaust port. Non-soldier Wyranth personnel held the crane's steam exhaust port pointed toward a small aperture on the other side of the chamber.
The Evolved Giant
Beneath Devil's Mountain, the Wyranth housed an evolved giant—a massive, blob-like creature of pure psychic energy, the transformed remnant of an ancient giant caught in the Convergence Engine explosion during the Great Sundering. The giant could project thoughts and emotions telepathically, feeding on violence, fear, and anger. The ingestion of the vitality ether extracted from it provided a link between the creature and those who consumed it, giving the evolved giant an incredible degree of control over Wyranth forces.
In The Blood of Giants, the creature was referred to as an ancient life form, described by one character as the giant that should have been eradicated.
In The Iron Wedding, it was noted that the giant that had lived in the mountain's heart could be sensed by soldiers with strong serum reactions. By the events of that novel, the pit where the giant had been was cleared and empty following the facility's destruction.
Role in For Steam and Country
In For Steam and Country, Devil's Mountain served as the primary objective of the Liliana crew's mission. The mountain was approximately one hour's flight from the ship's position during planning discussions in the mess hall. The crew recognized that the longer they waited, the more time the Wyranth would have to reinforce the site, particularly after the Wyranth became aware that the crew had already been inside.
Zaira's group used the exhaust shaft as an exit route following their initial infiltration. On the return mission, the Liliana carried an explosive device intended to destroy the creature and its laboratory. An alternate route was found and a tunnel was dug to reach the creature's chamber.
Upon detonation of the explosive, the mountain itself shook. Rocks fell from the mountainside and the aperture at its base caved in. A massive column of dirt and debris shot into the air. Fire broke out below, and everything pulsed in a brilliant baby blue light. The destruction of the evolved giant removed its psychic influence from Wyranth soldiers and effectively ended the war between Rislandia and the Wyranth Empire.
Role in The Blood of Giants
In The Blood of Giants, the destruction of Devil's Mountain was revisited in retrospect. It was confirmed that Zaira von Monocle and her father had detonated the bomb within the mountain, destroying more than simply the ancient life form referred to as a giant—including, as noted, most of the Wyranth's serum reserves.
One character stated that they had always assumed the tremors affecting Rislandia City were caused by the giant in Devil's Mountain. However, the destruction of Devil's Mountain and its giant did not stop the earthquakes occurring in Rislandia City, indicating that the seismic activity had a separate cause. The burrowing behavior of giants was also referenced in connection with Devil's Mountain, with a character asking whether giants burrowing into the ground elsewhere would produce the same effects as they had at Devil's Mountain.
Role in The Fight for Rislandia
In The Fight For Rislandia, Devil's Mountain was referenced by Zaira von Monocle as a point of comparison when she encountered a similar installation elsewhere. Zaira noted the presence of a large pit with several mechanical pipes at a separate facility, observing that it matched what she had previously seen at Devil's Mountain, behind the Wyranth capital.
"There was a large pit with several mechanical pipes, just like I had seen back in Devil's Mountain, behind the Wyranth capital."
Role in The Iron Wedding
In The Iron Wedding, Devil's Mountain featured prominently as a rebuilt and repurposed facility. In the year since its destruction, the facility had been rebuilt. It was identified as the location of Ivan, the Iron Emperor's laboratory, and Ivan summoned individuals there for meetings. The mountain was previously noted to have housed the Wyranth's serum production facility, where giants were first discovered. The pit where the giant had once been kept was described as cleared and empty.
The mountain was accessible via a dungeon below the Wyranth Palace and had a tunnel leading outside to the opposite side of the mountain. It loomed as a dark shadow visible from inside the Wyranth capital's city walls in daylight, and blocked the view of smoke rising from the capital city.
Zaira von Monocle was noted to have fantasized about Ivan going to the mountain to find precious ore for a ring.
"A dark shadow of Devil's Mountain loomed in the background."
"The Iron Emperor would like you to join him in his Devil's Mountain laboratory."

In A History of Rislandia
According to A History of Rislandia, Devil's Mountain carries a significance far older and deeper than its role as a Wyranth military installation. The sourcebook presents the mountain as the tallest and most sacred peak in the Devil's Range, located in central Wyranth, with the Wyranth Capital City built at its base. It is described as the empire's spiritual and political center.
Ancient Origins and the Convergence Engine
According to A History of Rislandia, Devil's Mountain is the location of the Convergence Engine explosion — the cataclysm known as the Great Sundering. The sourcebook notes that modern scholars debate whether the legend of Golgmarsh is a cultural memory of the Convergence Engine explosion that occurred beneath Devil's Mountain, suggesting the mountain's mythic resonance predates the Wyranth Empire itself.
The sourcebook states that the mountain is hollow, and attributes this either to ancient Giants or to volcanic forces — leaving the question open. This stands in potential tension with the novels, which present the hollowing as the result of Wyranth engineering.
Geothermal and Civic Role
According to A History of Rislandia, Devil's Mountain is not merely a military site but an active geological feature central to the life of the Wyranth capital. Geothermal hot springs from the mountain feed the communal baths of Capital City, and geothermal energy from the mountain powers the Foundries of Capital City. Buildings near Devil's Mountain use geothermal heating drawn from these natural hot springs. The sourcebook also notes that mines lead into the mountain from beyond the city walls.
Cultural and Spiritual Significance
According to A History of Rislandia, Devil's Mountain holds deep ceremonial importance within the Wyranth Empire. Soldiers swear the Iron Oath before Devil's Mountain, underscoring its role as the spiritual heart of Wyranth military culture.
The Wyranth Discovery of Year 375
According to A History of Rislandia, in Year 375 the Wyranth discovered ruins, artifacts, and crystals beneath Devil's Mountain — crystals described as still functioning at the time of discovery. The sourcebook states that this discovery emboldened the Wyranth to launch an invasion, and that what was found beneath the mountain changed the nature of the war. This discovery is connected in the sourcebook to the giant's blood serum used to enhance Wyranth soldiers, and to the evolved giant that was subsequently held and exploited there. This sequence of events is covered in greater detail on the Fantasy War (Years 375–383) page.
Theodore von Monocle's Imprisonment
According to A History of Rislandia, Baron Theodore von Monocle was held in a cell at Devil's Mountain. The sourcebook further credits Theodore as instrumental in the destruction of the evolved giant beneath the mountain. The novel-based account on this page does not mention Theodore's imprisonment at this location or his direct role in the destruction beyond his presence with Zaira.
The Destruction and Its Aftermath
According to A History of Rislandia, the Liliana conducted a diversionary attack on Devil's Mountain during the operation to destroy the evolved giant. The sourcebook records that an explosion destroyed the evolved giant and caused a massive earthquake at the site — a detail not present in the novel-based account on this page, which describes rocks falling and debris but does not characterize the event as producing an earthquake at the mountain itself.
