Rislandian Royal Symbols

The royal symbols of Rislandia are the official emblems associated with the Malaky dynasty and the Rislandian state. As documented in For Steam and Country, The Blood of Giants, The Fight for Rislandia, The Iron Wedding, The Crystal Conspiracy, and The Steam Knight, these symbols appeared in both military and ceremonial contexts, adorning the uniforms of officers and soldiers, the architecture of the royal palace, palace tapestries, the hulls of airships, and the medals awarded to distinguished subjects.

Overview

Two primary symbols are associated with the Malaky royal line: the Crown of Malaky and the Malaky crest. Both served as markers of royal authority and national identity, appearing across military dress and the physical spaces of royal power.

In The Blood of Giants, the Malaky crest is described as gear-and-wings in shape, appearing on tapestries within the palace halls: "tapestries of the gear-and-wings shaped crest of Malaky." In The Fight for Rislandia, the crest is described in greater detail as depicting "a crown, set into gears with wings on each side." In The Iron Wedding, the crest is described as "the gear with angel wings and a crown atop it," consistent with the descriptions in earlier volumes and confirming that the symbol combined all three elements: a gear, angel wings, and a crown. In The Crystal Conspiracy, the crest is described as "a gear, crown, and wings," and is noted as the crest of Rislandia named after King Malaky XVI. In The Steam Knight, the crest is described as "a gear with angel wings on the side, and a crown atop it," consistent with all prior descriptions across the series.

Crown of Malaky

The Crown of Malaky was a royal symbol incorporated into Rislandian military uniform insignia. In For Steam and Country, it appeared on the dress of Talyen von Cravat, a captain in the Grand Rislandian Air Force, rendered in two forms: a metal pin affixed to her right breast pocket, where it appeared atop angel wings, and a gold pendant on her military cap. As the text states, "A metal pin with angel wings and the Crown of Malaky atop it adorned her right breast pocket."

The Crown of Malaky also appeared on the person of Marina du Willet, who wore a small pin below her angelic wings and Crown of Malaky pendant: "A small pin of red and gold rested below her angelic wings and Crown of Malaky pendant."

The pairing of the Crown of Malaky with angel wings on military insignia suggests an established iconographic tradition within Rislandian military dress.

Malaky Crest

The Malaky crest, also referred to as the crimson crest of Malaky, was the royal crest of the Malaky line. It was crimson in color and appeared carved into the large double doors of the throne room as well as into the backrest of the throne itself, as noted in For Steam and Country with the description of "the crimson crest of Malaky carved into the wood."

In The Blood of Giants, the crest is described as gear-and-wings in shape, appearing on tapestries hung in the halls of the palace: "tapestries of the gear-and-wings shaped crest of Malaky."

In The Fight for Rislandia, the crest is described in precise terms as depicting a crown set into gears with wings on each side, and was worn as a standard element of Rislandian soldiers' uniforms on the right breast pocket. As the text states: "a crest of Malaky adorned his right breast pocket: a crown, set into gears with wings on each side." James Gentry also wore a pendant bearing the crest of Malaky on the right side of his chest. This description is consistent with the gear-and-wings form noted in The Blood of Giants and the crown element present in the Crown of Malaky insignia documented in For Steam and Country.

In The Iron Wedding, the crest continued to appear in multiple contexts. Talyen von Cravat wore it as a brass pendant on her right breast. The crest was also carved into the side planks of the new Liliana, marking the airship as a vessel of the Rislandian state. At King Malaky's Funeral Procession, members of the Grand Rislandian Army honor guard wore a golden pin of the Crest of Malaky in the center of their flat fuzzed black hats, as described: "a golden pin of the Crest of Malaky in the center."

In The Steam Knight, the crest appeared in several forms. Grand Rislandian Army soldiers wore it as a pendant above their right breasts, described as "a pendant above their right breasts of the Crest of Malaky," and a smaller matching version was worn on their caps, which was also embroidered on the matching caps of infantrymen. The crest was worn as a brass emblem over the breast pockets of Grand Rislandian Army uniforms. Additionally, journeymen wore pins of the angelic wings of the Crest of Malaky on their tunics, as described: "pins of the angelic wings of the Crest of Malaky on their tunics." The crest was again described as "a gear with angel wings on the side, and a crown atop it," consistent with all prior descriptions in the series.

Beyond its architectural and decorative presence, the Malaky crest was also used as the basis for royal medals. According to the Baron's log referenced in For Steam and Country, King Malaky XVI awarded medals bearing his crest to the entire crew of The Liliana in recognition of their service. The recipients of these medals are listed among the Liliana Crew.

The throne room, double doors, and tapestry-lined halls bearing the crest were located within King Malaky's Palace.

Role in For Steam and Country

In For Steam and Country, the royal symbols of the Malaky line served as visual shorthand for Rislandian military and royal authority. The Crown of Malaky appeared on the uniforms of Captain Talyen von Cravat and Marina du Willet, establishing their affiliation with the Rislandian military. The crimson Malaky crest marked the physical spaces of royal power within King Malaky's Palace and was distributed as a medal to the crew of The Liliana by King Malaky XVI himself.

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, the Malaky crest appeared on tapestries decorating the halls of the palace, described as gear-and-wings in shape. This appearance reinforced the crest's continued role as a symbol of the Malaky dynasty and its presence throughout the royal residence.

Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, the Malaky crest was shown as a standard element of Rislandian military dress, worn on the right breast pocket of soldiers. James Gentry wore a pendant bearing the crest of Malaky on the right side of his chest. The crest was described explicitly as depicting a crown set into gears with wings on each side, providing the most detailed visual description of the symbol to that point in the series.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, the Malaky crest appeared in several new contexts. Talyen von Cravat wore the crest as a brass pendant on her right breast. The crest was carved into the side planks of the new Liliana, extending its use beyond personal dress to the fabric of Rislandian military vessels. At the King Malaky's Funeral Procession, Grand Rislandian Army honor guard soldiers wore a golden pin of the Crest of Malaky centered on their flat fuzzed black hats. The description of the crest as "the gear with angel wings and a crown atop it" is consistent with all prior descriptions across the series.

Role in The Steam Knight

In The Steam Knight, the Crest of Malaky continued to serve as the primary symbol of Rislandian military identity. Grand Rislandian Army soldiers wore it as a pendant above their right breasts and as a brass emblem over their breast pockets, with a smaller matching version embroidered on their caps. Journeymen wore pins of the angelic wings of the Crest of Malaky on their tunics. The crest was described as "a gear with angel wings on the side, and a crown atop it," consistent with all prior descriptions across the series.

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, the Crest of Malaky was not confined to military dress and royal architecture. The sourcebook records that each journeyman knight of the Knights of the Crystal Spire received a custom-forged sword bearing the Crest of Malaky, described as "a custom-forged sword with the Crest of Malaky." This establishes the crest as a formal element of the knighting tradition within the Crystal Spire order, extending its symbolic reach into the realm of chivalric ceremony and the arming of new knights.
